Compose an 8-measure question-and-answer melody in a major key. First, choose your clef and key from the options. Remember that the tonic is the note the key is named after. For example, in D major, the tonic is D.
Measures 1–4 will be your question. To make the question sound unfinished, the note on beat 3 of measure 4 must be a half note and must not be the tonic. Because the tonic sounds stable, avoiding it near the end of the question creates a feeling of expectation.
Measures 5–8 will be your answer. To make the answer sound complete, end the melody on the tonic. Ending the answer on the tonic gives the melody a sense of resolution.
