Rest is the name we give to symbols that notate how long to be silent. Rests are a very simple part of notating music, if we can notate how long to play or sing a note, we also need a means of notating how long to stay silent. For every durational symbol there is a corresponding rest. In other words, if a whole note lasts for 4 counts, then there needs to be a rest that lasts for 4 counts, if a half note lasts for 2 counts, we need a rest for 2 counts of silence, and so on.
