Labeling Pitches

Letters A through G drawn at a ascending diagonal lineABCDEFGA

Pitch is the term we use to describe how high or low a sound is. Pitch is often synonymous with the terms tone or note. Pitches are labeled using the letters A through G of the alphabet. When we count forward in the alphabet the pitch rises. You can hear this by clicking on a letter in the graphic and then any pitch to its right. As we move up through the musical alphabet, each time we reach the letter G, we restart the musical alphabet at the letter A. The same pitch separated by eight letters like this is called an octave. So we can also describe the A at the top of the staff as being an octave higher than the A at the bottom.
