Basics of Music, LLC is an interactive music education platform. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.

Information We Collect

We collect different information depending on how you access the platform.

Direct accounts (email sign-up)

  • Your name and email address
  • Exercise attempts, scores, and completion timestamps

Canvas LMS accounts (LTI launch)

When your institution connects Basics of Music, LLC to Canvas via LTI, we automatically create an account for you using the information Canvas sends us:

  • Your name (as it appears in Canvas)
  • Your email address, if your institution has configured Canvas to share it
  • A Canvas user identifier (an opaque ID, not your login name or password)
  • Your role in the course (student or instructor)
  • Exercise attempts, scores, and completion timestamps

How We Use Your Information

  • Authentication — to log you in and maintain your session across visits.
  • Progress tracking — to save your exercise attempts and show your scores over time.
  • Grade passback — for Canvas users, to send your best score back to your Canvas gradebook automatically.
  • Instructor reporting — your instructor may view your scores and progress within the platform.

We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties outside of what is described above.

Data Retention

Account and exercise data is retained for as long as your institution uses the platform or until you request deletion. Session tokens expire after 7 days.

FERPA

For users in US educational institutions, student education records are protected under FERPA. We act as a "school official" under the direction of your institution and process student data solely to provide the educational service your institution has configured. We are willing to sign data processing agreements upon request.

Your Rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any time by contacting us. Canvas LMS users whose accounts were created automatically can also request that their account be removed.
